      Entrevista

I applied to a sales position at HQ in Cupertino in July and heard nothing back. Then for some reason in August I get an invitation to attend the East Bay Talent Hiring Seminar - I'm thinking I wasn't qualified for corporate but they wanted me to have retail experience first. I got to the Double Tree Hotel in Berkeley and immediately it was super awkward. They tell you to dress business casual but the Apple guys are always dressed in their blue retail shirts and jeans - however I strongly urge you to still dress bus. cas. because you are there to impress them. As soon as you get there try to mingle with the interviewers, there will be around 3-4 in the lobby. Ask them questions, make conversation, make sure they know who you are because that is the only way to make it to round 2. There were about 15-20 other candidates and they round you up and put you in a conference room. You all sit in a square and then face the projector for some videos and slides about Apple. PAY ATTENTION - you won't be called on but you're expected to answer at least one question or speak up at least once (if you want the job). They'll ask things like, "What did you take away from that video" then they'll move onto showing you pictures of the ipod/iphone/mac/etc and ask who has it and what you like about it, what's your favorite app. While you're sitting down the Apple interviewers will be surrounding you taking notes. Don't be intimidated. I was SUPER nervous when I read similar experiences on glassdoor before going to the hiring event and it's really not that bad. We did have to do introductions before (talk to the person next to you and introduce them to the group) but nothing on the spot like a scenario to act out, though you should still prepare for this just in case they mix things up. The last part of the seminar they split you up into groups and you pass around an ipod touch with questions on it. Things like "Name a time where you had a difficult customer" "Describe when you overcame a technical difficulty" standard things that shouldn't be too hard to answer. i did make conversation with my interviewers and just shared things I liked to do and how that relates to working at Apple and would help me in the future. The point is to make them remember you in a good way. They do 3-4 hiring seminars a day, with 15-20 candidates each time. If you get a call back consider yourself lucky. They told us we would know a week from that day if we get to move on or not. I got an email two days later to "Please update your account" which I didn't know how to take that. A week from the hiring seminar I heard nothing so I followed up with the person who initially emailed me (i tried not to sound desperate or pushy). He told me that I did make it to the next round and there was just a mix up because I requested a location that was not in their area. So he let me interview at the Pleasanton location. I interviewed with the assistant manager who was super chill, hard to tell what his reaction is to my answers. He asked me simple stuff like, "tell me about yourself" "what do you like to do" and then it seemed like the same questions from the ipod touch (he wasn't at the hiring seminar so I just used my answers from there). I got an email two days later asking me to come in for a final interview with the manager. She was a little more aggressive but still didn't throw any curveballs. I thought I did well throughout that interview but in the end is when i blew it. I was going for the honesty is the best policy thing and let her know the location wasn't the best for me and I would want to switch from full-time to part-time if I got another internship on the side. Moral of the story - say what you need to to please the hiring manager and work out these details later. I got an email a day later saying that wanted someone who closely match their qualifications but that I would be referred to the South Bay Hiring Event. So a week later I started this whole process over again. This time I was a little too cocky because I knew exactly what to expect and what the questions were going to be. Also the South Bay hiring event is held at Apple HQ!! exciting! Anyways, there are subtle differences between East Bay and South Bay hiring seminars. The East Bay interviewers seemed more welcoming, nicer, warmer, and more on your side, like they want to like you and want to hire you. In South Bay it felt like you needed to work for it more, the candidates were younger and more aggressive as were the interviewers. Also at South Bay you introduce yourself and your favorite/least favorite job. In the end i got an email saying I didn't make it to the next round. I think If i just shut my mouth at the end of the Pleasanton interview I would have gotten it. Can't say for sure but overall it was a really great experience. I still love Apple and wouldn't mind giving it another go - just be a little more humble and answer more questions this time. GOOD LUCK TO YOU
