These are redundancy protocols used to prevent a single poìnt of failure from accessing the internet. It allows for use of a Virtual IP by 2 or more routers as default gateway for devices in the network. If the Active device goes down, the Standby device takes over the default gateway role while the end devices do not get to know about any issues thus preventing downtime.
