Good management, like any good relationship, relies on open communication. Effective communication, in turn, relies on respect and honesty between the parties. As a manager, I work to earn my team's respect and to be honest with them about their successes and failures, and I expect the same from them. I lead by example, and make sure I touch base regularly so I know both how the team's work is progressing but also how they're feeling as part of the team. I also rely on external appraisals of the team's work and share those insights.
