It was an easy interview process, except for one interviewer asking a 'gotcha' question. He totally presented data as if it was one thing and it was actually another. Which I found as we progressed in the exercise. It was a simple problem, and maybe they're checking if you don't just blindly trust your teammates, but I certainly felt tricked. It was my fourth interview and I knew it was all a waste of time as I could tell his attitude shifted when I didn't catch that he gave the wrong data up front. Which led me to eventually question and figure it out, but by then it was too late. I have offers for more high profile roles at this point, so I guess no harm no foul, but I wanted to add this so that someone else in the future will know that Square's whole message about culture and being a different kind of tech company is completely bs, if that's the kind of people they have representing them as a company. I was really hopeful for more normal people and less tech douches, but what I experienced was very similar to Amazon's interview process. Also they talk a big game about diversity but my 4 interviews were all white dudes.

As a engineer with 10 YoE I was drawn to Square because they boast about their interview process being less algo/DS/LeetCode centric and more relevant to day-to-day. With a decade on my CV, thought I'd have a good venue to dive deep into my expertise and value I've provided elsewhere while demonstrating ability to get real work done. Applied online. Got automated response that I was in the system. Confirmation email again boasted about their interview style focusing on real-world scenarios. Contacted by a "recruiter" a day later to respond with availability for phone screen. Provided availability, got a google invite with hangouts link and coderpad link. Never got any non-templated/generated email from a recruiter, never had a chance to speak with Hiring Manager prior to screen to see if the role is even possibly a good fit. Tech Screen with 2 engineers. Both nice but got right to business as soon as they joined with a LeetCode-style medium difficulty problem. Solved it with 20 minutes to spare with a few hints from interview. He layered on a second, more difficult problem on top. With no time to implement, we discussed a possible approach. Obligatory 5 minutes at the end for questions. Generic rejection email the next day. Not convinced the recruiter was actually a human, likely a recruiter bot. Would have saved 3 engineers across both companies an hour of their time if fit was confirmed ahead of time and/or Square was actually honest up-front about what to expect. I understand this is standard process for big tech in the Bay Area who need to weed through hundreds of inexperienced applicants for every req, but Square should cut the BS and be honest that they are part of the LeetCode grinder.

Interviewed for Cash App. Asks you to provide answers to AML related questions in 48 hours. About five questions were asked and def not a casual questions that you can answer in 30 min. Need to actually sit down and spend a couple of hours to answer. They are not entry-level questions. Next step was a short interview with the recruiter. The company being Square, definitely did not expect someone with questionable professionalism for the interview. The in-house recruiter was late to the interview. I could hear from the recruiter 's voice that the recruiter was 'just doing the job.' Very frustrating interview because I was the one who had to lead the conversation. The entire process felt like I was either being interviewed to meet their hiring quota for diversity or I was simply being used as a training material.

Met with recruiter, then HM, then did 3 hour case study building a model, then did full round of interviews. After all that the recruiter never got back to me on the outcome. I emailed him three times but no response.

Hiring manager implored me to apply, stating that Square has moved away from algorithmic interviews. The recruiter also mentioned that interviews are based on "real-world problems". Instead, I was asked to traverse a nested array (a binary search algorithm, essentially). I probably would have completed the solution except the interviewer wasted half our allotted time on a "warm up" then only introduced the actual problem halfway through our session. This kind of interview does not measure real-world engineering skills at all and is biased towards people who have time to study (e.g. no responsibilities outside of work). Square claims to value inclusion and non-traditional backgrounds but their interview process clearly indicates otherwise. The cherry on top is that they will ghost you if they don't wish to move forward.

The recruiter I worked with was utterly unprofessional. I spent almost 2 months interviewing with Square and was told that I was one of two final candidates. After that conversation, the recruiter completely ghosted me, never giving me the professional courtesy of an email or phone call. The company touts treating people with respect, but that apparently does not include candidates. The interview process was call with recruiter, call with hiring manager, first onsite round of interviews, take home assignment, final round of onsite interviews, and then dead silence....

There was no recruiter call, only a direct call from a hiring manager, and there were no technical questions involved, mostly self-reported description of interests and background, something that a recruiter screening call should cover, so as to not waste my time or the hiring manager's time. No following feedback either. I expected more from you Square! The interviewing process at Google, though notoriously long, was much better, objective, thorough, and fair. I suggest they take notes from them.

Pretty standard interview process: 1. talk with hr 2. 1h technical interview or for mobile positions there is an option to choose a take home project. 3. Then 6 interviews (virtual on site). 2 coding sessions (continue on the project for mobile), 3 Q&A behavior sessions and 1 session with hiring manager. Read many negative reviews here about coding sessions so chose the take home project which was not difficult or tricky. Everything is straightforward and gives you a chance to be your best self. On the other hand, Q&A sessions were weird. They all have different theme but many questions were asked multiple times. Felt like interviews didn’t sync up who asks what and they just googled behavioral questions and chose questions from the first page. Moreover, everyone asked to introduce myself (6 times I repeated my intro) even though next questions were not related to my experience for most sessions. Recruiters didn’t respond when they promised. Also, one recruiter sent an email to schedule a call to give a feedback after the virtual on-site, scheduled for the next day and the call was just 3 minutes (said I didn’t perform well on one of the sessions) and that was it. Well, it could have been an email or a call same day. No need to schedule a whole meeting if you don’t know how to give a meaningful feedback. Overall, on site interviews left negative impression. Everyone in the industry conducts interviews for the whole day, seemed like Square just copied it without training their employees or preparing questions and dividing areas. It’s hard to make an unbiased decision if you don’t have a structure and clear expectations. Not to mention, all interviewer (8 people) were male that makes me question how diverse and inclusive this workspace is.
