I'm really sorry you had that experience. We tried to ask simple questions that quickly show if someone knows what they're doing. Maybe the ones we used were a bit too nit picky.
'What is data science' is a bit philosophical, but we're trying to find people that see the point of data science is to find value in data and apply it in the real world. And we give the simple kaggle exercise as an easy code test to make sure people know what they're doing, and as a way to compare all candidates across a common variable. We value people's time and want to be fair.
And we very much value people. Sorry if we were short with you in the interview. That wasn't the intention. It was just a hectic day. But we've certainly learned from the experience.
