Interview was very, very stiff and almost clinical in nature. The hiring manager read questions from a list for an hour and ten minutes consecutively, providing little room for levity or personal connection. The whole endeavor felt more like I was being deposed than interviewing for an administrative role in the Humanities section of the University. Hiring managers please keep in mind that you have to woo a candidate. Just because you have an opening doesn’t mean you’ll have applicants chomping at the bit for you to extend an offer. I ultimately withdrew my application as an internal candidate after an exhausting first round, and they hired an external candidate to fill the role. In my nearly ten years at Yale, it is always quite telling when these coveted, unionized administrative positions go to external candidates.
