Community Digital Navigator Māpunawai Inc. | Hawaiʻi State Public Libraries
Pay: $25–$35/hr | Hilo, Pahoa, Mountain View & Keaau Public Libraries.
Māpunawai is looking for people who are rooted in Hawaiʻi and ready to put their tech skills to work for their community.
Community Digital Navigators are, at their core, tech support — and strong tech support at that. This role requires genuine fluency across devices, operating systems, browsers, and software, paired with an aggressive problem-solving mindset. When something isn't working, you dig in — you don't wait for an answer to appear. Beyond everyday tech, we expect our navigators to have broad exposure to the technology landscape: if you've never heard of the Tor browser, aren't familiar with the basics of cryptocurrency, or feel shaky on the difference between hardware and software issues, this role probably isn't the right fit. We're not looking for experts in every corner of tech — but we are looking for people who are genuinely curious, widely read, and comfortable in territory they haven't mapped yet.
What You'll Do
- Work in person at 4 Hawaii State Public Library Branches: Hilo, Pahoa, Mountain View & Keaau Public Libraries - each receive approximately 8 hours per week.
- Help patrons navigate everyday digital tasks: email, online forms, telehealth appointments, job applications, and government services
- Assist people with smartphones, tablets, laptops, and library computers across multiple platforms and operating systems
- Use the Northstar Digital Literacy framework to structure and guide learning sessions
- Troubleshoot a wide range of hardware and software issues — and know when to escalate
- Facilitate digital literacy workshops for groups of varying skill levels
- Create a welcoming, low-pressure environment for learners of all ages and backgrounds
What We're Looking For
- Strong, broad technology fluency across devices and operating systems — not just the ones you use personally
- Experience guiding or teaching others — tutoring, mentoring, training, or classroom support- even if it's just your friends and family!
- Deep community connection — you know your island, your library, your neighbors; you show up for them
- Patience, warmth, and the ability to meet people exactly where they are
- Bilingual or multilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply — language access is a core part of what we do
What You'll Get
- $25–$35/hr based on experience and location
- Paid onboarding — a structured orientation to our systems, tools, scheduling, and the communities you'll serve
- For full-time positions (anything over 20 hours per week), Māpunawai covers medical, dental, and vision at the top tier — the most comprehensive plan available. We believe people doing meaningful community work deserve benefits that reflect that.
- Paid time off (full-time positions)
- A role with real impact, embedded in the heart of your community
