Company Background
Mahipapa LLC is an independent power generation company that owns and operates a 7.5 MW closed loop biomass power generation facility and provides power to Kauai Island Utility Cooperative on the island of Kauai, State of Hawaii. Mahipapa’s operation includes managing and harvesting eucalyptus trees grown on Kauai, which is the sole fuel source for generating power to over 10% of homes and business on Kauai.
Key Responsibilities
ESH Specialist will be a key team member of our diverse, result-oriented team consisting of power generation operators, maintenance technicians and forestry heavy equipment operators. We are looking for an energetic professional who is highly organized, punctual, efficient, and is able to work collaboratively with our dedicated team of professionals with different levels of experience and backgrounds. While the standard hours for this is position is Monday through Friday, regular business hours, as the power generation facility is a 24/7 operation, there may be occasions where the ESH Specialist may be required to perform work outside of the regular work hours.
Key accountabilities for the ESH Specialist include:
- Ensuring that Company’s operations comply with Federal and State of Hawaii environmental regulations including Title V permits (Clean Air Act), SWPP (Stormwater Pollution Prevention), SPCC (Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure)
- Overseeing compliance with requirements included in various permits to operate that are issued to Company by divisions of the State of Hawaii Department of Health
- Maintain files and record systems relating to Safety and Environmental Programs and prepare periodic reports and summaries as required by applicable standards and in keeping with best practices.
- Implement OSHA mandated safety programs, review and make changes to programs when necessary to better protect our personnel
- Facilitates mandatory monthly/annual training is completed and proper records kept, including Hazard Communication, PIT’s, Lock-Out/Tag-Out, First-Aid, Hearing Conservation, etc.
- Foster safety culture and encourage co-worker involvement in safety through conducting safety committee meetings.
- Leads the investigation of incidents and injuries and conducts preparation of material and evidence for recordkeeping and potential use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations. Analyze incidents and recommend corrective action to prevent repeat accidents.
- Represent company in communications, contacts, and visits with any state/federal regulating officials.
- Maintain and monitor safety equipment to support continuous safe operations of the plant. Maintain related inventory.

- Ability to read and comprehend the Federal and State of Hawaii regulatory framework governing environmental protection and worker safety.
- Must have effective written and oral skills.
- Professional demeanor with good judgement.
- Intense curiosity and keen desire to learn about power generation.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite with moderate skills in Excel and Word.
Experience and Training Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED certificate.
- Post-secondary certificate or degree in occupational & environmental safety management (a plus).
- Work experience in industrial or manufacturing setting (a plus).
- Manual dexterity and ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
- Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
