Data Connection, doing business as Metaswitch Networks, develops and sells messaging and networking software, including applications for e-mail, Web conferencing, and directories. The company's softswitch is sold primarily to telecommunications companies offering broadband service. Data Connection also offers software development and deployment services. Customers include Alcatel-Lucent, Ciena, Cisco, IBM, and Microsoft. CEO John Lazar was promoted to chairman in 2010; he was succeeded by Kevin DeNuccio. Founded in 1981 by chairman Ian Ferguson and six other former IBM employees, Data Connection is employee-owned, with equity stakes also held by Francisco Partners Management and Sequoia Capital.
