This was actually the first job I ever applied to way back in May of 2005.....and even to this day, it was the most bizarre experience I ever had.

In order to get in, you had to do an audition where you basically teach anything that is non-academic. They say that it is a way to see your personality, but in all my years of teaching, that idea never really resonated at all.

Plus, the guy who conducted the auditions was wearing baggy jeans and flip-flops, of all things, not exactly the most professional appearance I've ever seen.

How can one determine a candidate's abilities to teach complex SAT or MCAT materials based on how he demonstrates a peanut butter and jelly sandwich???

I always thought that it was more effective to give a lecture on those test materials and just try to let our natural passion and enthusiasm come through.

Since that audition day, I've met with countless teachers and doctors and they really come alive when they talk about their work. Can you truly feel that same inspirational magic power in a PB&J sandwich demo??? I don't think so.
