I coded up the answer but the interviewer was not interested it seems. he hardly spoke anything or give any hints/suggestions. He seemed to be unhappy that my way of the solving problem was different from what he knew as the answer. In the end, he mentioned that since his way of solving the question is different than what I am doing so he does not have any input.

The key in these questions is to cover the fundamentals. There's usually a back-and-forth with the interviewer.
