Do you have any questions?

This was asked in both the preliminary HR interview as well as the interview at the actual lab. For the HR interview, because I had yet to fully understand the way the process worked, I asked if I as able to request a specific lab to work in and whether or not I should reach out to that PI. I think they were impressed that I had read papers published by specific labs and that I was able to explain why my current research was related and/or why it would make me a good fit. When I was interviewing with people in the specific labs, I responded to this question by asking about the different projects being worked on and which one I would be involved with were I to be hired. Again, I made sure to read up on all the different papers published by my specific interviewer and/or lab, so that I could ask these questions in a very specific way. I also want to state that this question is extremely important because it demonstrates your ability to really understand your field. For example, I think I was ultimately hired because not only did I ask about the research being done, but I also asked specific questions about what direction a project was going and what techniques would be used to do so. Its another subtle way to show off how smart you are, how much experience you have, and how valuable you would be were you to become part of the team.
