I confirmed first if the wire was actually damaged by asking what has happened prior. Then I would test the wire myself to see if current is flowing through the wire properly. After checking the condition of the wire, I would measure how much of the wire I need to put in the new connector. Then I would cut that distance away and only deep enough into the wire wear I can then solder the wires to the right connectors.
