How do you begin the process of designing a new feature when given just a simple request? How do you explore those ideas and how do you process them for the team to understand properly?

I showed them how I worked through a request by taking the issue at large and working through the problems and getting a bigger picture of the requested work. I then iterated on a few ideas and showed what I thought would be good first steps in the designing of those ideas.
