There are several things to determine before approaching this type of situation, such as: Is this behavior typical of the employee? Have they always had a poor attitude or is this a new development? If the behavior isn’t typical, it’s important to determine why they have become negative- have there been recent changes at the workplace such as new employees or new policies? In my experience, it is often not a job-related issue but rather another issue in the employee’s private life- whether it be related to money, love, family, school, etc. If the negativity is impacting other employees or the service being provided to the guests, it is important for management to sit down with the employee to discuss the problem. If the employee has never had these problems before, or has a great potential in the industry, I believe it's critical to motivate employee to overcome and correct the negativity/poor attitude- in fact your concern may be enough of a motivation! If the associate has repeatedly caused issues or shown lack of concern for co-workers, guests, and/or their job, and has not shown improvement after a 1-on-1 sit down with management... well, sometimes it's better to move on professionally and let them work the problem out themselves- while not affecting the property.
