How would you handle a difficult customer?

When we think someone is difficult, more likely we haven't understood him or her. My first attempt would be to understand the pain-points of customer to know the real reason behind being difficult. That forces me to think like him and with mutual understanding and cooperation we can come up with a solution that is win-win for all.
