Pink Rose is a small home remodeling and construction business, looking to grow rapidly. The position was for outside sales, which required familiarity with home remodeling techniques and time frames, as you would be quoting the overall project cost, labor and materials. I have a passion in home remodeling and construction and an extensive professional background in sales in diverse environments, including quoting jobs listing materials and labor, and was considering marrying both into a career that I would be passionate about. I can talk the talk, have played in that sandbox on and off for 20 years, and know about all the toys. So, this seemed easy enough. The phone interview went well. I described my capabilities and experience and after a week, was called in for a personal interview. Immediately following the return call for a personal interview, it went downhill faster than a kid in a go kart without brakes. Before I arrived, I was advised to enter the building through one of the numbered doors. Upon my morning arrival, I found that numbered door was incorrect. I called again, and was directed, in a curt and quick manner, to go in a different door, and straight down the hall. "we are right there." The building was under construction, so to get to the office, you had to go through that distant door and then had choices of up, down, or same floor which immediately led into a rather shabby shipping and receiving area littered with boxes. Believing that entering into a cluttered S&R area was incorrect, I tried up and down. Ok, so I don't always guess correctly. Once you navigate through, you could see a hallway (under construction) in the far corner. Down that hall, take a couple of turns and you are there. Ok, so for a home remodeling and construction business, if they cannot even tell you a few simple directions after inquiring 2x, I started to question their competency. As the interview finally started, I was asked to tell a bit about myself, my relevant experience, capabilities, and what I bring to the table. As I started to relate, the interviewer (I won't mention names, but remember I said this was a small business ) immediately and continuously took and responded to text messages. I do realize that anyone can have a bad day, but this was not the case with the lady he was interviewing when I arrived, as I could see and hear everything. She had his undivided attention as all candidates deserve. I find it hard to get an idea of a person's capabilities when you are concentrating more on texting, and only awaiting for a pause to move on. What I did get out of the interview, was that they are a much smaller outfit than I had anticipated. The average expected compensation I was advised, I could not see coming anywhere near to obtaining in the working hours expressed. I found this to be the most unprofessional interview I have ever heard of, and by the end of the short interview, I had already made up my mind that my professional attitude and that of Pink Rose do not match, I would not be contributing my hard work and placing my reputation along side of theirs, especially since this was a 100% commission position.
