      Entrevista

There was an Assessment Centre for the Internship which included an interview, written task, logistics task and 10 minutes to teach a skill to two employees. The interview was held by two people, including one of the Directors who is the CEO's brother (I did not know this initially as I was only given their first names when they introduced themselves). I found the questions to be quite intrusive, being asked about my current job, how much I earn, what other jobs I had applied for, what feedback I had received from failed interviews, if I had ever cried at work and why, what was the most valuable thing I had spent less than £100 on in the last six months, how honest and tenacious I thought I was on a scale of 1 to 10, amongst other questions. I didn't really feel like I was being asked why I had applied for the internship or the company, or why I thought I was right for the role. It seemed that both interviewers had a set of sheets in hand with a list of interview questions that were more generic rather than specific to the role. At one point in the interview as I was answering the question, the Director put his palm up towards me whilst looking down at his question sheet to indicate that I should stop talking, which I didn't think was done in the most respectful way. When I was given an opportunity to ask them questions, I asked what had brought them to the company and how they found it working there. The Director's answer suggested that he was more interested in helping people in general and that diversity doesn't really concern him - an interesting comment seeing as the company specialises in diversity in graduate recruitment - and that prior to this job he was DJ-ing and running a sheesha lounge, until his brother gave him a role within the company which he is now Director of People for. I didn't feel like this gave a good impression of the Director's own drive and commitment to the company, which was made more noticeable to me because I had spent the past 45 minutes in the interview trying to prove why I am dedicated to the role and company. For the logistics task, which I had received no prior information for, I was briefed with the task to tidy up a room within 20 minutes in order to make it ready for a hypothetical meeting which would be attended by the company's clients and directors. This task required me to: pick up items from the floor, adjust tables in the room, clean the tables, bring more chairs to the table, put away items of food, pour a jug of water and place glasses on the table, lay out stationary on the table and connect the laptop to the TV screen. My end result was then scored. I felt quite humiliated at being tasked and assessed on how well I can clean a room. I understand the role is for an intern, but I would like to think that it is a given that a prospective employee is able to tidy an office and does not need to be assessed on it as part of their application process for the role. Finally, at the end of the assessment centre I was told I would hear back from the company within a few days to find out if I was successful. A few days turned into a few weeks and it was not until about 6 weeks later that I finally received a response. I was rejected for the role. I have completed other assessment centres before this one so I could identify instantly that I was not being treated as well as I have been elsewhere, and I was able to not let it affect me too much. But the thought that someone who has not experienced an assessment centre before may be invited to this company's one, and experience something similar to me without knowing any better, has inspired me to share my own experience in the hope that it might be able to prepare them for it - or think twice about attending!
