Actually for an entry level Software Engineer, Epic has relatively easy coding test. You don't need a compiler to verify as your code doesn't have to compile, but of course you need to get basic syntax right. So, if ( a=b) instead of if (a==b) is fine as the reviewer will get from context what you meant. On other side, Epic really isn't looking to hire a lot of Software Dev. They are overstaffed after losing several big projects to competing company and are actually in the process of systematically reducing head count, without making any public announcement. So don't feel bad thinking you failed.
