I spoke about a time we hired the wrong contractor for a project and realized too late into the project that our deliverables would not be met. Instead of pointing fingers (we all had some responsibility in the situation) we regrouped quickly to meet our deliverables, minimize $ loss, and work as a team. I stressed that accountable leadership is necessary in order to pivot without shame, and that it is really important to debrief after the project to find improvements RATHER than blame others in the process of pivoting. One of the lessons learned was that we need to identify an internal lead on all projects. As a result, I was selected to lead the project the following year. I chose to highlight this example because mistakes are inevitable, how you recover says even more.
