      Candidatura

Candidatei-me online. O processo levou 4 semanas. Fui entrevistado pela Theodo (Londres, Inglaterra) em ago. de 2022

      Entrevista

The interview process was very long. I had an initial HR chat whereby they told me that I needn't prepare for - but they started saying that I need to be more pragmatic and not ramble on the context of my background. I passed that and received a coding assessment. It was all Leetcode/Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA) questions and I managed to answer 2 out of 3 - the 3rd question was a Dynamic Programming (DP) one. I passed that and went on to a TDD pair-programming exercise, competency-based interview with the Agile Coach and a math logic interview. Later at the final-round, the CTO had a look at all my DSA answers and asked me why I wasn't able to do the DP question. I had told him that I placed more emphasis on learning web development and dedicated less time to DP as it was an advanced algorithmic topic. He had informed me that the role doesn't involve dealing with any algorithms at all but he just wanted to assess the breadth of my knowledge. I told him that I would explain the logic of DP and managed to solve the DP question through pseudo-code with minimal guidance. I was then rejected and was told that it was because I didn't have a Computer Science background and that I am welcomed to apply after 6 months of FullStack commercial experience. At every stage of the interview, feedback was provided by the Agile Coach - I received mainly positive feedback and the constructive feedback was to be even more pragmatic with my answers which I believe I improved on every round. However, I was rejected on an extremely arbitrary basis which could have easily been filtered out at the initial chat. I had been transparent that I was a self-taught career switcher and have been honest and clear about my credentials from the get-go. I had even clarified this at the initial chat and was reassured that they "welcome graduate developers from varied backgrounds". To be clear, I have a masters in a STEM field and I was informed by the senior engineers who interviewed me that they are a very welcoming company who even hire people from the arts and social sciences background. I was informed that the CTO was not confident with my background based on the DP question and that they would not be able to provide the support and training that I would need so he veto-ed the decision despite the good feedback from all my accessors at every round. I was very disappointed as I was brought in to have a tour of the office and was even assigned a buddy on that day. I had voiced out my feedback on the assessment process which wasn't taken very well by them initially. I told them that I believe I was set up for failure from the very beginning and that my time and energy was very disrespected by Theodo as a whole. My DSA assessment was submitted 4 weeks before the final-round interview with the CTO so to be rejected based on that and my credentials was extremely unexpected. I had passed the DSA stage too with positive feedback so I thought that it was meant to be challenging to weed out candidates. It is quite obvious that the Agile coaches and the CTO have very misaligned metrics in hiring graduates/juniors. I am unsure if the application process has changed since I have given my feedback - but thought I would share this for transparency.
