      Candidatura

Fiz uma entrevista na empresa ThoughtExchange.

      Entrevista

It has 3 main steps apart from other calls. * Step 1: was with one of the higher management plus the software engineering manager. They were asking questions like "what you will do in the first 3 months of the company?", "What you will do after 6 months?", "Talk about one of the major projects you have worked on in your last role"... * Step 2: was more about asking high level software engineering questions and some brief technical questions * Step 3: was combination of "SQL, Algorithms, Object Oriented,...". The interview process took longer than usual about 2 weeks(more than 2 weeks) to set meetings and specially that we had a long weekend in between so I had to wait for the last interviewer to come back. I passed the 2 other interview and the outcome was great and me and them were exited, however, I couldn't able to understand the last interviewer Algorithm question. It was about Secret Santa and where I come from we didn't have something called "Secret Santa" so understand that for me was critical to answer that question. However, the interviewer wasn't able to describe that to me so finally told him let's move on please. I didn't think they will reject me only because I couldn't answer one single question. The interviewer was asking me about a SQL join that I could write that like a piece of cake but he told me based on the question you should put "true" instead of "false" in the "where" statement of the join so your answer is not correct!! Seriously?!! I wrote the whole join and I only forgot what you said in the question and because of "x = false" instead of "x = true" in the where statement you rejected my answer?!! Another question that he asked was "What is implementation and what is Extension"? So because the position title was "Software Engineer/Developer" so I thought probably he is talking about Software Engineering principles. So I said "Implementation means starting to code after designing the whole system..." and "Extension means adding new feature to the already build system..". But it turns out they mean in "Object Oriented" programming so I immediately said "Ok, so I guess because you mean in OOP category, so implementation means interfaces which are.. and Extension means extending a class from ..". Finally, I answered the question but it showed how bad they are doing the interview. Overall, after waisting of so much time and rejecting some other offers because of them, I have received a "No" response from them which made me think I should listen to reviews next time.

Thank you for your feedback. At ThoughtExchange, we want to make the interview process a quick and respectful experience for each candidate. We try to give candidates the opportunity to meet several senior team members throughout the interview process. Unfortunately, scheduling and holidays can sometimes impact how quickly we move through each stage which it did in this case. Part of what we look for in our interview process is how a candidate clarifies the requirements of a problem. For our algorithmic-based questions, we hope candidates have not seen the problem before. We attempt to describe a software problem in several ways, but we expect the candidate will dig deeper, if they require more information That said, we thank you for bringing to our attention the cultural context in which this particular question is framed (the secret santa question) and we will ensure we use more generic and inclusive language when describing software problems moving forward.
