In software engineering, don't repeat yourself (DRY) is a principle of software development, aimed at reducing repetition of information of all kinds, especially useful in multi-tier architectures. This is a term I've started to hear more recently, and according to Wikipedia it's been around since the early 2000's (which is later than when I escaped grad school, which is why I didn't know this term more thoroughly)
