Cross product returns the perpendicular vector that's in the direction of the right hand rule and the dot product returns the sum of all component wise products between two vectors. The dot product represents how parallel two vectors can be. 0 means perpendicular and 1 means parallel in the same direction and finally -1 means parallel in the opposite direction. Finally if two vectors are unit vectors, the dot product represents the cosine angle between the vectors.
