User stories are a tool I haven't used in years, as they're not a fix-all for communications. I'd assess/understand the teams needs, ways of working, and find ways to bring engineers into discovery so they understand and help shape the work. If writing stories helps them, I'm happy to, but I've yet to find talented engineers who need/want a strictly formatted user story to deliver great, impactful work.
