Because image compression techniques (e.g. JPEG) often rely on the fact that most of the energy concentrating on low frequency terms, therefore by discarding high frequency components, there is no downgrade in the visual impact to human brain (we tend to discard details and high frequency terms). So it's important to know the general characteristic of the energy distribution in frequency domain and its impact to human brain before compressing the image.
