The TO is the liaison between the telescope and the astronomer. They ensure what the astronomer wants to do is safely accomplished in such a manner that provides no detriment to the equipment or the course of the astronomers data. They are also the first line of defense for troubleshooting and fixing the telescope in case anything goes wrong as well as knowing who to contact when the issue is above their heads.
