IMAP because of its ease of setup, wide spread use, and its nearly universal compatibility with all devices. Also, because by default it have the ability to store emails on the server and allow multiple people to access them. It also introduced the ability to setup folders that would also sync to the mail server. (Was asked this question in final interview.)
