I would try to find something that the student liked to talk about. Then, I would use that to start a conversation or to use this knowledge to explain something we were learning. Try the 2X5 strategy. Spend two minutes a day for five days developing a personal relationship with a student. It is a trust building exercise for both you and the student. Hopefully these short conversations will lead to a better understanding of each other and will build mutual respect.
