It was my first year of afterschool programming and one day a boy was being very defiant with staff. My coworker and I discussed it and she said he must be hurting. I realized that she is most likely right since kids manifest problems with behavioral issues rather than saying how they feel. I tried to say that when someone is hurting they want to hurt others and that we need to let him know we care about him. Another boy thought I said no one loves him. I told him he was loved unconditionally. He thought I said no one loves him so he told his mom that and she came to the school upset. I explained to the site and program director that I told him he was loved unconditionally so they explained that to his mom then things cooled down

She was angry and I told the site supervisor/program directors I said he was loved unconditionally. They realized I made no mistake
