Why are manhole covers round?

Actually, it's because the circle of a larger diameter (cover) cannot fall into the circular hole of a smaller diameter (manhole). With any other shape, that would be possible, provided their dimensions are relatively similar.

Being round also lends itself to rolling. Manhole covers are not light by any means.

Cylindrical holes are easiest to dig. So, the manhole being the top of a cylinder is a circle.

Because it makes it the easiest to put back into place and have a better guarantee of it being seated properly. Also, it makes it easier for entrance and exit of the hole.
