My answer was purely fabricated. While there is not a damn thing fishy about my reasons for moving to the area, I wasn't about to tell some total stranger a bunch of personal details about me and my family, or the events over the past 8 years that led me here. This is about the job - focus on that. We're not here to make idle chit chat, we're here to discuss the position and what I could bring to the company. Wouldn't you rather know whether or not I'm a good fit instead of why, years ago, I decided to relocate?? I had been here for many years and worked in the area for all this time. It would be one thing if I was living in Texas and was interviewing for a job in NYC, but this was about why I made a move 8 years ago. The question was serious, not an "ice breaker" or attempt to gain rapport. In the context it was asked it felt weird as hell.
