You were studying pharmaceutical science, why switch to chemistry as in basic science?

Chemistry is the foundation of pharmaceutical science. A small step in chemistry, though hard, would make a significant impact in the whole pharmaceutical industry. I am more curious about how innovation happens at the basis level.
