“Well, at one of my previous stores, we had a policy where if something rang up wrong, then the customer received the item for free. And we had this gal that would come in every week on Senior Discount Day, and after we rang her purchases, she would go off to the side, review her receipt, check her notes, the circular, etc....and then come to me at Customer Service. I believe she took pride in finding our mistakes more than the free items. However, after getting to know her, I came to know that she was a fairly recent widow, a bit lonely it seemed (as this was her big moment every week to get out of the house), and on a budget. I always helped her with a smiler, and as time passed, I truly enjoyed getting to know her. Sometimes people just want others to listen to them and be kind. Which is what I did. On the plus side, she ultimately helped us long-term with shrinkage, because we were able to correct our mistakes on the pricing of certain items after she left. Compassion and kindness. They are a win/win combination in my opinion.”
