We are thrilled to announce that Linda B. Laul will now lead the organization as Chief Executive Officer. She will be the fourth CEO in ADAPT’s 79‐year history and is the first woman to hold the title. She assumes the role following the recent passing of ADAPT CEO Edward R. Matthews, who led the organization for 35 years. “Ed Matthews, ADAPT’s leader of over thirty‐five years, gave us a legacy that we can all be proud of, and a responsibility to carry it forward,” says Linda B. Laul. “ADAPT is fortunate to have had him in our midst to forge this vision and shape ADAPT into an environment which advocates for the rights and dignity of all people. We are empowered by the tools he left us to create new opportunities for the people we support.” Laul began her career as a special education teacher and moved into administration for the New York State system supervising residential, day, and clinical programs throughout Long Island, NY where she worked for over 19 years. She joined ADAPT Community Network in July 1990 as the Assistant Executive Director for Day Services. In 2012, Laul assumed responsibility for all programs and clinical services as Chief Operating Officer of ADAPT Community Network. “Linda Laul has been a vital part of ADAPT for 35 years, showing incredible leadership in helping people with developmental disabilities in truly meaningful ways,” says ADAPT Board President, Kelly Kaminski. “Linda has the complete support of our Board of Directors.”

On Friday March 15th, representatives from the company Rifton came to visit ADAPT’s facilities at 175 Lawrence Avenue. Rifton is a company that makes adaptive equipment such as chairs, trikes, standers, toileting systems, and much more. This visit was geared towards training ADAPT staff on how to use the newest version of Rifton standers, as well as receiving feedback on their functionality. Physical therapists and occupational therapists from ADAPT locations all over the city were present for the event, as well as therapists from children’s programs in Manhattan, Staten Island, and the Bronx. Thank you to Rifton for the important work that they do!
During the month of February, we celebrate Black History Month! This month, ADAPT Community Network has paid tribute to the rich tapestry of Black culture and the leaps and strides made by Black Americans in the field of disability rights and beyond. Throughout our programs and schools, our staff and the kids and adults we support are recognizing Black history through art, performances, poetry, projects, and more. Check out some of the ways ADAPT is celebrating Black History Month, including a special event hosted by Brooklyn Day Hab 1 and 3 with guest speaker Spencer Chiimbwe, Human Rights Commissioner for Rockland County!
Are you looking for a way to give back to your community? Look no further— ADAPT is currently hiring volunteers to support our staff at in-person and virtual community engagement events. As a volunteer, you will represent ADAPT and share information about ADAPT’s support and services mostly at tabling events. You will be accompanied by an ADAPT staff member, who will support you and answer any questions you have. We’re looking for people who have strong communication skills and enjoy engaging with people at our community outreach events. Those who enjoy their time with us the most are those who are adaptable and flexible, often learning new information on the job. For more information about this opportunity, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Mark Heffner at mheffner@adaptcommunitynetwork.org or (929) 884-4501.
