Exciting news! One of BBLC's amazing BCBA's, Sadie Zawisza, is publishing a children's book this summer! "Miles’ Eyes" is coming June 2025📖✨ Read more below⬇️ "My very first children’s book will be available for purchase in June 2025. On top of my job at BBLC as a BCBA, I am also a personal caregiver for sweet Miles Curtis. Miles has a regressive genetic condition called Phelan McDermid Syndrome. He lost his words at six years old, his ability to independently eat, use the stairs, and hold a toy at seven, and the ability to chew and swallow safely at nine. He now relies on mobility supports and, as of last year, a feeding tube. Miles’ Eyes is about a boy named Miles, who might look and act differently than other children. But that's precisely what makes him so special! The book includes a simple but powerful message: “So remember, dear children, when you see someone new, Whose way might be different, from me or from you. Look past the outside, into their heart's core, And you might discover much, much more." It’s a reminder to be curious, open, and kind. A different way of doing things doesn’t mean something is wrong—just different. My goal in writing this book was to spark conversations about inclusion and the importance of friendship across all abilities. A good friendship brightens our days, supports us through tough times, and helps us grow. The beauty of friendship is that it thrives on differences! This book encourages and equips you to start these conversations."
✨ Exciting News! ✨ We are thrilled to announce that Skill-Based Treatment (SBT) is now available at our Quincy and Lowell Centers! SBT is a modern, compassionate approach rooted in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), focusing on teaching essential life skills rather than just reducing problem behaviors. Through SBT, individuals develop: ✅ Effective Communication ✅ Tolerance to Delays & Denials ✅ Context-Appropriate Cooperation By reinforcing these skills in a fun, engaging, and individualized way, we empower individuals to navigate challenges with confidence and autonomy. As Greg Hanley, Ph.D., BCBA-D, LABA, the creator of SBT, says: "It’s not about what to stop doing, it’s about what to start doing." Our dedicated team, trained by Dr. Hanley himself, is already seeing incredible results, with immediate reductions in challenging behaviors and increased engagement among our learners. 💙 Want to learn more? Meet Ryan - Registered Behavior Technician "Hello, my name is Ryan, and I’m an RBT at BBLC’s Newton Center. My typical day involves running sessions with my two main clients, embedding learning opportunities wherever I can while keeping sessions fun and engaging. My favorite part of this role is seeing the progress the kids make over time. For example, my morning client, who started shortly after I did, has progressed from using signs for functional communication to using 2-3 word vocal phrases in just six months! Seeing this growth and the impact on his family is the biggest reason I became an RBT—I love supporting others in becoming the best versions of themselves. I’m also incredibly grateful for the support at BBLC Newton. The welcoming, collaborative environment has been essential to my personal and professional growth. I received thorough training from experienced RBTs and BCBAs before taking on direct sessions, allowing me to transition smoothly at a comfortable pace. The team is fantastic to work with, and I’ve been able to develop my skills while receiving quality supervision in pursuit of my BCBA certification. For those considering becoming an RBT, my advice is to find a workplace that values its staff as much as its clients. BBLC does this, allowing me to make a meaningful impact without sacrificing my own well-being. Families can trust that the team here is fully committed to their child’s growth."
