The Minnesota State Legislature focuses on creating laws for the state. The legislature consists of more than 130 members in the House of Representatives and about 70 members in the Senate. Representatives serve two-year terms, and senators serve four-year terms. Legislative sessions begin each odd- numbered year in January and can last up to 120 days. The House and Senate can override a governor's veto with two-thirds vote in the House and Senate. Thousands of bills are brought to the legislature each year, and several hundred of them are signed into law. The Minnesota State Legislature has a biennial budget of about $127 million.
