The Selective Service System remains in place should those drafty days return. The small federal agency is charged with providing personnel to the Department of Defense in the event of a national emergency. Though the US ended the draft in 1973, the Selective Service System remains in place as a contingency. It registers almost all male US citizens, ages 18 through 25, and manages this data so a draft can be resumed if necessary. Women are not required to register. The agency is also responsible for implementing an Alternative Service Program for men classified as conscientious objectors during a draft. The agency has a headquarters, data management center, three regional offices, and a $27 million budget.
