State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Company (SVMIC) provides medical malpractice insurance to more than 15,000 physicians in the Southeast. A group of Tennessee doctors established the company in the 1970s to provide coverage that other insurers were increasingly discontinuing. In addition to providing basic liability protection, the founders wanted to build a company that provided loss prevention and risk management services and training for its policyholders. SVMIC is active in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee (which accounts for more than half of its business), Texas and Virginia.
