Prós

Butler is a great place to work with many benefits and perks. You feel connected to the university and it's mission. The retirement match is the best I have ever seen and tuition is free if you want to go back for your masters or send your child. Work-life balance is great.

Contras

Working conditions could be A LOT better. I am in the basement of a building and it is just gross. Cockroaches are seen almost weekly. One actually fell onto the table my co worker was sitting at just inches away from her. There was also a dead bat underneath one of the mini fridges in a breakroom. If you bring these issues up, you are seen as being "dramatic". However, it's just plan gross and no one should have to work in these conditions. There is constant flooding. I have been raising the issue of a weird mildew/mold smell in my office for a while, but no one seems to care even though it does not go away. The systems that are used throughout the campus are extremely outdated. Just putting in a PTO request is cumbersome and shouldn't be in 2024. People are very much stuck in their ways and will not learn a new way to complete a task.

Prós

Wonderful lab culture. Great learning environment. Opportunities to grow laboratory technique skills and work independently on solo project. Many chances to present findings at data meetings or poster conferences. If you are an undergraduate looking for research experience, look into what each professor is researching, reach out to them, and be yourself. They want to teach people who are open to learning and willing to try new things.

Contras

Takes a lot of time. You need to invest in what the professor is researching, read previous literature published to get familiar with the research topic and hypothesis. Not a lot of networking opportunities, so you have to be the one to initiate and find them yourself.
