- Co workers are generally friendly and nice to work with - Feels like a relatively diverse company particularly for the engineering department compared to my previous companies. - Salary is fairly good - Option to work in an office if you live close.
Contras
- The company used to encourage events such as Hackathons and department meet up days, these haven't happened for a while and I've seen no plans to resume. - Similar to the above, quarterly project team meetups used to be encouraged to help with team building and to negate the downsides of remote working, these seem to have been canned and only virtual activities remain. - The progression framework and promotion process is frequently being changed, creating confusion and a feeling that the goalposts are being moved. - On the topic of the promotion process, as a mid level engineer aiming for a senior role I'm expected to work outside of my day to day project work to meet the requirements of a senior engineer, this includes activities such as department wide presentations and writing Medium articles. I don't believe these are typical requirements of a senior engineer. - The newly introduced framework around salary increases feels ambiguous. - There's not a diverse range of projects to work on, most engineers will spend their time at this company on a gambling project. The work is not very interesting and speed of delivery is heavily prioritised over code quality, because of this I've found my growth as an engineer to be slow and in some areas worse off compared to previous roles. - Previously the company was aiming to move away from gambling related work to diversify client offerings but they now seem to be redirecting back to a gambling focus. This among other factors lead me to believe the company is not heading in a great direction. - Learning & Development used to be a key focus and a good benefit but the L&D days have since been paused and are undergoing a "rework", I believe this is a shift towards L&D being focussed on specific topics such as AWS and given the other framework reworks in the company I'd expect this benefit will end up worse.
