nice office space, good salary, flexible schedule
Contras
1. There was no organizational focus. The business ostensibly sells storage appliances, but there were customers paying for hosted email, hosted VMs, VDI, DRaaS, event managed IT services. The engineering team could not focus on supporting the main part of the business (e.g. internal and customer-facing infrastructure + customer support) because of all the random other stuff. I pointed this out, but rather than removing these services, they continued to take on more.
2. There was no engineering focus. We had one instance where there were multiple customers affected by a limitation in poorly-written code in the product. The customers were angry, but the development team would not work on it because they were implementing new features. At least one customer said they would never but another Racktop product as a result of that experience.
3. Poor company culture. Maybe not everyone, but some team members were incredibly resistant to change and acted childishly when I tried to do things differently. There was also no documentation - everything was in someone's head, which combined with the childish behavior made it very difficult to get work done.
Overall the company seemed more interested in making sales and having parties than fixing the systemic issues affecting the company.
