Entrevista

Applied online then after a month I received contact about a numerical reasoning test. It was incredibly tight on time, the clock was hidden when you scrolled down so you couldn't effectively manage time, and the questions didn't define what some of the metrics they were asking for were.

First interview with senior designer. Ran through current portfolio. Answered behavioural and technical questions about general menswear situations. The next stage was a project, designing a capsule collection - followed by a second interview where I talked through my processes and thoughts behind what I designed.

Candidatei-me por meio de uma agência de recrutamento. O processo levou 1 semana. Fui entrevistado pela ASOS (Londres, Inglaterra, Inglaterra) em Sep 2021

Entrevista

I've thought hard about creating this review. I don't want to be one of those that leave an angry response to a failure. However, I feel the ASOS recruiter crossed the line when he provided feedback on my performance, especially considering that I think there was miscommunication around requirements. It feels like it was delivered such a way by the ASOS recruiter to retaliate for my feedback on how the process went. I think that's really bad. Originally I was found by a recruitment agency and I was interviewed for a Solution Architect position. There was no initial HR call, I was asked a couple of screening questions through the agency, one was technical on databases (CAP Theorem). Then I received a brief to use as a basis for a presentation with the hiring manager and the ASOS recruiter, during a 90 minutes call. I sent my solution through with a supporting document the evening before. The brief asked for logical architecture diagram for a business problem, it made no reference to Functional or Non-Functional Requirements, it did not specify how high level the diagram should be, and it allowed for making any assumptions you like about services. In hindsight, it was so generic, it would have been useful to customise it to steer the interview. I would have customised it. Based on one of the screening questions, I delivered how I would implement the solution, using event driven architecture plus some synchronous calls. My expectation was that it would be technically analysed during the interview. It became clear very early on that a) the hiring manager expected a very high level diagram and mostly based on Functional Requirements, and that b) he was not technical. He was not able to provide a technical feedback on my design, and when I tried to explain some of the decisions I made, he moved on quickly. He kept asking questions around Functional requirements and was not able to engage with my CV in a meaningful way, I am not completely certain he read it before the call. I admit, I gave up at one point because I could see it was a disaster. I did not have the depth of preparation on Functional requirements that he expected. I gave feedback to the recruitment agency stating that ASOS were looking for a Marketing email specialist. So far, so whatever. Interviews go wrong all the time. A few days later, the ASOS recruiter arranged a call with the title ‘your interview feedback and possible next steps’. Which led me to believe that maybe it hadn't gone as badly as I thought. He then proceeded to explain that the call was necessary because he understood what people would need to succeed in such a fast paced environment and why I didn’t have that. Ouch. That they have seen good presentations and not so good ones and that mine was more at the not so good end. Ouch. That it wasn't "clear". I asked for technical feedback on this point, saying that this was vague and high level but there was none. I tried to explain that this was clearly a case of mismatched skills and expectations, I was told that other candidates had similar experiences to mine but that they researched the opportunity. Ouch. That hurt especially considering the amount of effort I put into this (partly as a learning process for myself), hoping that I would get feedback on my design. To dismiss that is very rude, it is also clearly false. I was told that ASOS did not see me at my best on the day, especially considering the expectations they had based on my CV. The ASOS recruiter just stopped short of implying that I had lied on my CV. Ouch. I was told that I gave good authentic answers to behavioural questions, except to the one about “Leading Leaders” (stop laughing at the back). When I tried to give my side of the process and how it felt to deal with the confusion over requirements or the fact that the hiring manager wasn’t able to engage with my CV in a meaningful way or provide feedback on my diagram, the ASOS recruiter’s response to this was that I was entitled to my perceptions. Ouch. I don’t think I need to explain further what my perceptions are of the ASOS recruitment process and how some appear to view the candidate pool. I think that making feedback very personal can potentially damage someone's confidence while job seeking. I fail to see why any of this was really necessary and how it benefited anyone.

Very efficient process. Application to offer in just over 2 weeks. Not a complex application/interview process. Only 3 stages - a simple application form, an online interview, and a face to face interview with an intake task and a maths test.

  • Online interview: competitors, the ASOS customer, biggest brands on ASOS, why ASOS, role related question, skills for the role, most relevant experience. Face to face: how do you manage your time, a time you've worked in a team, how you've responded to feedback, a time you've not received any guidance.

Entrevista

Interviews are a two way process however at ASOS that is not the case. The first stage interview was a full presentation, not providing me with the opportunity to find out more about the role before I commit to lots of work. Got through to the 2nd round and there was another task to complete. There were 2 parts to the task, meaning it would need about 6-7 hours prep, on top of a day job. From a mental health perspective, this isn't great. I felt like I had to jump through a lot of hoops. For someone with years of experience, I haven't encountered this before in an interview process and it really was unjustified. One presentation at the second or third stage is usually what happens, not 2 presentations from the offset. It did feel like I was being taken advantage of by having to do 2x substantial presentations. So I declined to move forward as it's really put me off working at ASOS. It gave me some good insight into the culture at ASOS too.

it was a recruiter phone screen, then online questions with recording my answers, then onsite with a senior and lead who asked me questions and were quite professional. it was a good, but average, interview experience overall. i didn't get the impression they are a major tech company, they are just e-commerce and have decent enough tech department.

Candidatei-me por indicação de um funcionário O processo levou 2 semanas. Fui entrevistado pela ASOS (Londres, Inglaterra, Inglaterra) em Aug 2021

Entrevista

There were three phases, a phone interview, technical test and a final stage with 3 people. First over the phone talk was quite typical, it allowed both parties to decide if they were happy to proceed, simply talking high level about what they were working on and then me doing the same about my current role. Second stage was a take at home test, where you had 2 hours to refactor a solution based on conditions supplied with the test. Third was a 2 1/2 hour interview with three employees where I discussed my technical test and white boarded (paint) the architecture of solutions at my current role. Plenty of best practice and technical questions asked throughout as well as generic and behavioural based questions. This was a really free-flowing interview which I enjoyed - lots of engagement and felt like I was just having a chat with three similar minded people. Overall it was a great experience where I was kept up to date throughout the whole process and quickly heard back after each phase.
