I sent my resume to a job posting on craigslist for a managerial position involving online order processing. I thought it was probably for an e-commerce company. The next day I received an email telling me I sounded like an outstanding candidate and to email them my availability for an interview. The company name was revealed and it turned out to be American Income Life insurance company. After sending them my availability, I received another email with a date and time to come in, and the name of the person with whom I would be interviewing.
In preparation for my interview, I googled the company and found the reviews on glassdoor. Most of the reviews were for sales agents and mentioned that it was a commission-only job. I wasn’t concerned though because I didn’t apply to be a sales agent, I applied to be a manager in what sounded like an in-office job doing mostly computer work.
When I went to my interview the next day, I entered the building and saw about eight other people there for an interview. I realized then that it was a bait-and-switch and I was at the same cattle-call type interview that the sales agents described. They had three different managers there that interviewed each of us separately and then brought us all into a room and gave us an hour-long presentation along with a questionnaire to fill out about our personalities. The person I was supposed to interview with wasn’t even there. It was all different people.
Turns out it’s just a multi-level marketing pyramid scheme that is 100% commission. The whole presentation was scripted and despite what they say about not everyone making it to the next level, everyone does. Not only is it 100% commission, you need to pay for a $200 course and get a license before you can even start working. The course is given in Edison, NJ so if you live in Cherry Hill you’re going to be schlepping it up to north Jersey everyday. Plus you need a car and your own laptop (windows-based only). They give you the leads and then you have to drive around all day going to people’s houses to sign them up for a life insurance policy.
It sounded like if you are the right kind of person you can make a lot of money doing this job. But if you’re like most people and want a guaranteed paycheck and to stay inside the office, look elsewhere.
Overall it was a waste of two hours of my time. The job posting was completely deceptive and I found the whole experience very disappointing. They called me with a job offer (of course, nothing to lose on their end), and I told them I was disappointed and that the job posting did not describe the actual job.

The interview takes place in two stages: an initial group overview of the company, then they’ll do final rounds of 1 on 1 interviews. The overview was just an hour long presentation of the company and job position. If called back for the 1 on 1 interview, then it lasts about 45 minutes and you get an offer or don’t on the spot, which took me by surprise.

They are trying to sell you on joining their company. It felt like nothing more than smoke and mirrors and a thirsty attempt at baiting you to join their pyramid scheme.
