      Entrevista

Initially fluffy video call with manager, where he did the talking and told me how he thought I'd be a great addition to the team. He seemed to have really paid attention to my resume, which was nice. This led to a multi-person onsite interview. I met with a different manager first, who did most of the talking and asked few questions. I met with an engineer next, who had three problems (anagrams, roman numerals, and trie-based autocomplete). I completed the first two correctly, and didn't get much into the third. I was told no one did, and he let slip that their standards were high, but I'd done well. I met with an architect next. All light talk, although I sensed a "trying to catch me out" vibe here. You know, where you say something innocuous and they repeat it back in a vaguely menacing, questioning tone? Seemed like that, but perhaps it was my imagination. Then another engineer, with a binary tree problem. I gave him a recursive solution, and then described an iterative alternative. Very friendly, seemed happy, especially that I could do both variations. Then a platform architect with a really interesting distributed processing question we explored for two hours. He kept me an extra hour to really get into it. I was rejected. The recruiter told me it was because I lacked experience with frameworks they use, like Dropwizard and Docker. The former was particularly silly, as I've used it in my last three work projects and one personal project, and am pretty much an expert in its use by now. So I assume there was miscommunication, and the real reasons remain mysterious to me. Overall, a fun interview with smart people. A shame they didn't see a place for me on the team, or communicate back rejection reasons that made sense or helped me improve for other companies. I tried to be kind here, but reading the other things on Glassdoor, I can tell exactly who people talked to in several cases. My overall impression was they were selecting for people exactly like themselves, including the non-technical aspects, and that would limit their ability to hire. They might be under the (common) impression that they accept "only the top 10%," which can't be true for all the companies that claim it. I learned a few things from them during the process, and I do wish them well in their efforts to fill out their team.

First, thank you for sharing your interview experience. Your feedback is very helpful to improve our process and make it a useful and enjoyable experience for our interview candidates. I am the hiring manager that first talked to you because I was impressed by your credentials. My intention in an introductory call is to provide our candidates an overview of the overall opportunity and discuss the role, our teams, our product and our company. Many find this introductory call very useful to research and come prepared with their own questions. Our team remembers having a good experience interviewing you and had mostly positive feedback. We want to set up our new hires for success and being upfront about our expectations is crucial. For some senior engineer positions, we expect you to also lead a team and as a result manage other engineers in your team. This role was one of those and we needed someone to step as the technical lead and assume this responsibility over time. However, we recall that you clearly didn’t want to take on this responsibility. So, we were concerned about this and a couple of other areas that we chose not to move forward at this time. I am sorry that there was a miscommunication in the process. We believe you are an experienced engineer and hope that you will come back to meet us again for a different position We are continuously hiring and are always looking for seasoned engineers to come join our growing team. Just because this role did not work out for you, does not mean there is no other role for you at Anaplan. If you have any questions or need any more clarifications, I will be happy to have a call with you anytime.

      Entrevista

It was a poorly organized drive with a lot of chaos. Candidates had to wait for several hours, and interviews were not conducted as per the scheduled time. People from multiple domains were called together, and the interview panel lacked technical depth, focusing mostly on project management questions instead of actual technical skills. Overall, selections seemed to be based more on first-come-first-serve or luck rather than merit. Bad experience.

      Entrevista

The process started with an initial phone screening followed by an interview with the hiring manager which covered a range of topics. The final step was a really interesting programming exercise that involved developing the basic solution in your own time and then extending the system during the interview. I felt that the interview process was challenging but the interviewers always worked to get the best out of me. Throughout the process I was supported by Mark Wilkins who was really great to work with. He kept me really well informed throughout the process and was really supportive and helpful. One of the best recruiters I have worked with.

      Entrevista

TL;DR: Their recruitment is a mess. Avoid at all costs. Process: 2 interviews + coding assignment. First interview goes okay. Recruiter and developer on the call. Good chat with the developer about tech and what they do. They agree with the agency recruiter to send the coding assignment before the weekend. This doesn't happen and it's sent early in the week asking to complete it in 24 hours so they can review it. Given it's a coding assignment that takes a few hours of focused work to get a decent submission ready, they must think that we all sit crossing our arms on a weekday, ready to take their assignment. This obviously gets pushed back as it's unacceptable because I have work to do on that day (yes, they knew this, but didn't care). The pair programming interview goes well, with a couple of cool and knowledgeable developers. However, they didn't really have a code template ready. Apparently, that's somewhere but they don't know where - another failure of the recruitment department as they don't make sure everything is in place. But no problem, we just create a project from scratch and it leads to a good session that leaves me with a good feeling about the development team. Then, the legendary incompetence of the HR people shines at its greatest: once I get the contract, they say that it's unacceptable that I'm outside the UK for longer than 30 days, as they have some policy forbidding this. Given I'm a contractor, the work is going to be done remotely for the full length of the contract, and there is a global pandemic and a second wave in Europe right before Christmas (people go home for Christmas given the work is done remotely, right?), this is silly at best. The contract doesn't get signed for this reason, wasting weeks of my time, as I made it clear that I would spend a few weeks abroad during the first interview where the recruiter should have taken a note. To the CEO: fire the HR people responsible for losing good developers for stupid reasons, if you don't want them to destroy your company.
