I applied online and though it took a couple weeks, I heard back with a request for an editor test. Fairly simple. I did that, and quickly heard back wanting a phone interview. I spoke with the Editor-in-Chief, Lilly who was nice, impressed with my editor test, and we seemed to develop a nice rapport. I did note a couple things that gave me pause. The position was listed as part-time but reading the duties expected made me think it was really a full-time position. I asked about this during the interview and Lilly said they were reconsidering whether it was part-time or full-time. The second thing that gave me pause was the position was advertised as remote, which seems a bit unrealistic for a Politics Senior Editor even though there is a Blavity office based in my area. Lilly asked me if I would consider relocating to LA from my hometown in Northern California. The interview still went well, Lilly told me I would hear back from her about a second interview and a final decision in about a week. I never heard back. About 2 weeks later I sent an e-mail to Lilly asking for an update and a few days after that (I thought I got ghosted) she said they were making a final decision and would get back to me over the weekend. I find out Monday afternoon they went with another candidate and would keep me in mind for other positions as they built their team. A lot of people applied for this position and I'm sure many of them had more experience than I did so I felt grateful to even get an interview. That said I was concerned I'd possibly get burnt out with this job especially if I had to travel back and forth to LA a lot.
