The CTO is also the hiring manager. The first salary figure he threw out verbally was $120k, to which I said north of $150k would be more my range. Their initial offer in writing was for $150k base salary plus equity. On the zoom call explaining the informal written offer he said "you could counter" so I countered 15%. They saw my counter-offer and decided that I was "not a good fit" based on my too-high salary requirements, which didn't make a lot of sense to me.
