I applied through an academic job board. I was invited to fly out for a day of meetings and a presentation. The day of interviews was busy and intense but pretty predictable.

They asked a lot of questions, but the key ones were about my teaching: my preferences, style, and my ability to fit the needs of the department.

The interview itself wasn’t bad, but the panel asked several questions that seemed irrelevant to the position and more focused on trying to critique me. They didn’t appear to take the process seriously, and their approach came off as disrespectful and unprofessional, especially to someone who was simply trying to present their qualifications in the heat of an interview.
What added to my frustration was having driven two hours for the interview after being told I was a qualified finalist, only to receive no follow-up when they chose another candidate. It’s frustrating that they expected a serious commitment from me—traveling, preparing, and showing up in person—yet couldn’t extend the basic courtesy of a response.
Experiences like this are common in today’s job market, but that doesn’t make me feel any less frustrated that I received them all from CSU East Bay.
