      Entrevista para Remote PHP Developer

      Candidato(a) sigiloso(a) à entrevista
      Remote, OR
      Oferta recusada
      Experiência positiva
Entrevista com nível médio de dificuldade

      Candidatura

Candidatei-me online. O processo levou 1 semana. Fui entrevistado pela Dotfive (Remote, OR) em mar. de 2018

      Entrevista

Applied online via CWJobs and Lucy at Elastic Recruitment (who was awesome through the whole process) The process took around a week from start from finish, it consisted of 3 stages: 1) Telephone call with Dan @ Dotfive - this was a very relaxed, non technical telephone call talking about the company, how they work and the sort of work they do. Dan was professional yet relaxed throughout the call. At the end of the call Dan explained the technical test, how it was created and explained the two parts of the test and what was expected. 2) Technical test - After completing the call, Lucy sent over the technical test which was a PDF consisting of 2 parts; a 25 questionnaire which covered a wide range of topics from PHP to MySQL. It was one of the most diverse question sets I have come across while interviewing, and it tested your experience in various subjects rather than your ability to read the PHP documentation which was great. Like the other reviewer on Glassdoor I also showed colleagues the test as I was impressed, and I received positive feedback from them all (they all particularly liked the describe yourself in JSON question!) The requirements for the code test were as follows: "Create an application which will allow at least two users to log in simultaneously and manage items in categories. The categories should be in a hierarchy of potentially infinite depth. The items only require a label. The users should be able to perform standard CRUD (including moving items and categories around in the hierarchy), plus if one user makes a change, the other user should see the change (if appropriate) without manually refreshing their page. Your solution should follow best practice and be robust and scalable." There was also a separate list of "Bonus points" which you could implement if you wished. It was advised that the test should take 2-3 hours (which has been around the same as all of the other technical tests I've been asked to do recently), but you could spend as long/ as little as you liked on the test. I spent around 4 hours on the test, which was over the span of a weekend. I fulfilled all of the requirements, and a couple of the "Bonus Points" in that time. 3) Technical Interview - This was a Slack screensharing call with Dan and a Senior Developer named Rhys. They were both very friendly and personable guys which kept the conversation casual while remaining on-topic. The call started by talking about my technical test, things I would have done differently if I had more time, and what things I wasn't happy with etc. After that the call progressed to some very "out-of-the-box" thought provoking questions asking you to explain (at a high level) how you would go about developing certain scenarios explained to you (one was about detecting collisions within a grid). The call then progressed on to some live coding. Dan and Rhys asked how I would implement a couple of new features into the test I produced for them, they weren't after perfect code, was more pseudo code seeing how you would approach the task and where you would put the logic etc. The call was very relaxed, we had a laugh, we got on well and the whole experience was very enjoyable from start to finish. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shortly after the call Lucy got in touch saying that Dotfive would like to make me an offer. I won't go into details of the offer but I will say it was above the market average for remote roles. From start to finish, it was one of the most enjoyable interview processes I have experienced in 13 years, and I think a lot of development companies would benefit a lot from adopting a similar approach. The end result was, I was very happy with the offer, the company and the people. However, due to a sudden change in personal circumstances I decided to abort my job hunt completely. That said, as soon as I sort out my personal life - the first thing I do will be to get back in touch with Dotfive!

      Entrevista

To summarise, this application felt like a scam. I showed the test to some friends of mine that are both employees and owners of dev companies and they all warned me about wasting time on this. I decided to take a leap of faith which took 2-3 days. On the bright side, I got to use the Pusher sockets service which I will totally use in future projects and I have a new submission for my github page! This is what the recruiter Lucy Williams sent me: 1. Non-technical interview (via phone or Skype) - this will be with the MD and will be a friendly chat about the role and your background. Technology and skills will be discussed, but there will be no technical questions as such. 2. Technical test - if all goes well in the non-technical interview, you will be asked to take a technical test. This is expected to take around 2-3 hours and you can do it whenever suits you best (it is not a timed test). 3. Technical interview (via Skype or Slack, with screenshare) - this will be with the MD and the dev team lead. There will be some technical questions and discussion. 4. Face-to-face interview - there is a short list of non-technical questions in preparation, and then a meeting with the MD and certain senior members of staff. The initial phone call was with Dan Williams the MD and lasted about 40 minutes. Asked questions about why I left previous work, worst coding experience etc.

      Pergunta 1

The technical test includes 25 questions covering topics "Programming Concepts", "What to use, when", "Practicalities", "Database" and "Personal". Spans 2 pages of the PDF.

      Pergunta 2

The coding test is best shown as a copy and paste so you can appreciate the scope of it. Coding test This coding test is designed to show us your thought process and approach, as well as demonstrate your skills. How much effort you put into it is up to you, but typically we would expect two to three hours is reasonable. Some people choose to spend more - that’s fine, but not required. You are welcome to stop whenever you like. We are not expecting you to spend an insane amount of time on this. We feel that, using the right technologies, it is possible to achieve what the test asks for, in the timescale indicated. If you cannot achieve everything exactly as you would ideally like, let us know. Feel free to ask us questions if you need to. Technologies Use whatever languages, frameworks, etc. you feel are best, or are most comfortable with. This could be something spangly-new and cutting-edge, or old-school and boring - it’s your call. Points will not be won or lost based on this choice, providing it is fit for purpose for the requirements. The only technology requirement that we have is that it should be able to run on Linux - either a standard Linux VM, or using AWS systems. Beyond that, you are free to specify architecture and system dependencies as you see fit. Please choose an appropriate CSS framework or implement something so that what we review is pleasant to look at and shows some thought as to layout and interactivity. Requirements Create an application which will allow at least two users to log in simultaneously and manage items in categories. The categories should be in a hierarchy of potentially infinite depth. The items only require a label. The users should be able to perform standard CRUD (including moving items and categories around in the hierarchy), plus if one user makes a change, the other user should see the change (if appropriate) without manually refreshing their page. Your solution should follow best practice and be robust and scalable. User journeys Mark wants to keep track of his belongings. He logs in, and is presented with a list of categories, showing the different levels visually. He adds “Electronics”, and under that, “Televisions”. To this category he adds the items “49-inch LCD”, “40-inch plasma”, and “32-inch CRT”. Sandy logs in and creates “Gaming consoles”, and under this, the items “PS4 Pro”, “XBox One X”, and “Nintendo Switch”. Mark sees Sandy’s entries appear. He moves “Gaming consoles” to sit under “Electronics”. This change appears on Sandy’s screen as soon as he has done it. Bonus points The following areas are not required, but if you choose to include them we will count them as bonus points. ● Authorisation (user levels, permissions, ACLs, roles, etc.) in addition to authentication. For instance, allowing some users to edit, and some to view only. ● Appropriate and sensible tests. ● Any other dimensions on the data that might be useful, e.g. tagging. ● Responsive design techniques for different screen sizes, mobiles, etc. ● Any form of notifications - e.g. toast, element styling - to alert the user that something on their screen has changed.

Hi, I'm sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy our test. It has been put together as a collaborative effort by our current dev team, and it is designed to show us what we need to know in a variety of areas. We give the opportunity to ask questions, and we also indicate a guideline for how long to spend on it. Unfortunately, not everyone will pass it, but thank you very much for your effort and we wish you all the best on your search. PS - We're not in Manchester! ;)
