The crony was an old mate who was a golfing partner who achieved a senior role at a internationally recognised multinational who had been fired and was grateful for working at this small company.

Why would someone like you want to work in a place like this?
Interview process is very unstructured. There are usually no second interviews or attempt to meet face to face with hiring managers. Interviews are usually conducted by office clerk whom has no interview experience or education to make critical decisions.
